Most people use a trade-up calculator for the profit number. The float number is the one that actually changes the profit. The same output skin can be worth four times more in Factory New than in Field-Tested, and the float your contract produces is fully deterministic — you can know it before you buy a single input.

The float formula, in full

Step one, normalise each input inside its own float range. This is the part people miss: it is not the raw float that matters, it is where that float sits within what the skin can actually roll.

normalised = (input float − skin min float) ÷ (skin max float − skin min float)

Step two, average all ten normalised values. Step three, map that average into the output skin's float range:

output float = average × (output max − output min) + output min

Why restricted float ranges are a cheat code

A skin whose float range is 0.25 to 0.70 normalises to 0.00 when bought at 0.25 — even though 0.25 is a Field-Tested float and the skin looks worn. Ten of those give you an average of 0.00, which produces the lowest possible float on the output. This is how traders build Factory New trade-ups without paying Factory New prices for inputs.

Working an example

Say your inputs all have a float range of 0.00 to 1.00 and you buy them at 0.10. Each normalises to 0.10, so the average is 0.10. If the output skin has a range of 0.00 to 0.80, your output float is 0.10 × 0.80 = 0.08, which is Minimal Wear. Buy the same inputs at 0.06 instead and the output lands at 0.048 — Factory New, and usually a large jump in value for a small extra cost per input.

Finding the floats you need

Steam does not let you filter by float, so float hunting happens elsewhere. CSFloat lets you search an exact float range, which is the fastest way to assemble a low-float contract. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the float of a CS2 trade-up?

Normalise each input float inside its own skin's float range, average all ten normalised values, then multiply that average by the output skin's float range and add the output's minimum float. A trade-up calculator does all three steps as you type.

Does the average input float have to be low to get Factory New?

The normalised average has to be low, which is not the same thing. An input bought at the very bottom of its own range normalises to zero regardless of how high the raw number is, so skins with restricted float ranges can produce Factory New outputs from Field-Tested-looking inputs.

Can one high float input ruin a trade-up?

It shifts the average by a tenth of the difference, which is often enough to cross a condition boundary. If your predicted output float sits close to 0.07 or 0.15, a single bad input can cost you a wear tier and a large chunk of value.

Is the output float random?

No. Only which skin you receive is random. The float is fully determined by your inputs, so it is knowable in advance for every possible outcome.
